Melanie Britton has spent the last 23 years doing what she loves…teaching music! Working with teenagers and building successful high school band, orchestra and choir programs has been her passion and her student groups have won 6 International Championships, performed in Carnegie Hall, been featured performers on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, traveled internationally and are consistent winners of Superior ratings throughout the country. In 2008 she was honored to be named the DVUSD "Teacher of the Year" and in 2011 was named by School Band & Orchestra Directors Magazine as one of the “Top 50 Directors Who Make a Difference” in America.
12 years ago Melanie began experiencing debilitating Vertigo, a result of continued exposure to loud sounds experienced through teaching and performing music. In 2012 she was finally diagnosed with Vestibular Migraines – a rare form of Migraine that affects the inner ear and balance and chronic Tinnitus – constant ringing in the ears. With the help of multiple audiologists and doctors, Melanie has learned that hearing loss is at epidemic proportions in 30-40 year olds and only getting worse for future generations. Her goal is to educate ALL who are blessed with the ability to hear music to remember that noises we experience on a daily basis are quickly deteriorating our hearing, that there should be time limits placed upon exposure to certain sounds, and especially raising awareness about the importance of owning and wearing proper ear protection when necessary.
Volunteering has been a large part of Melanie’s life and she has been honored to work with education outreach programs such as the Phoenix Opera and Ballet Arizona, Free Arts of Arizona, serve as Vice President of the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association, Arizona Representative to Women Band Directors International, Advocate for Etymotic Research and H.E.A.R., and continues her membership with the National Association for Music Education. She also enjoys being a guest conductor and clinician and has recorded several CD's.
Happily married to her "Prince Charming" husband and mom to United States Merchant Marine Academy Class of 2017 daughter, Melanie is equally comfortable in an elegant gown or "roughing it" while camping. Melanie's hobbies include enjoying every free moment with her family, hiking, biking, and most especially…fishing!
